The month coincided with MetLife’s annual global campaign âVolunteering with Purpose – 90 Days of Giving,â a three-month global campaign that encourages employees to participate in a series of volunteer initiatives supporting environmental and community causes across the world, such as making prosthetic hands for amputees of landmine victims in the developing world as part of the Build-a-Hand â¢ program and assembling sports kits for the Special Olympics Young Athletes program.
Employees in MetLife’s nine Asian markets have volunteered more than 6,000 hours in these initiatives in addition to local environmental and community programs. For example:
In Japan, employees participated in street cleaning and attended educational seminars with community partners like the Nippon Foundation to learn more about social and environmental issues impacting communities across Japan. Volunteers also made chopsticks from recycled scrap wood to donate to local senior care facilities.
In China, employees assembled 600 sports kits and recorded motivational messages for young Special Olympics athletes. They also built 300 prosthetic hands for the Build-a-Hand â¢ program.
PNB MetLife in India launched two of its major annual CSR programs in October: one as part of its âDaminiâ (Inner Light) initiative to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene for over 4,000 adolescent girls; and “Glow Green”, a commitment to plant 30,000 trees over the next three years.
Almost 1,000 Asian employees also participated in MetLife’s annual Global EcoChallenge: a two-week program to take concrete, everyday actions to reduce OUR environmental footprint. Participants saved 4,795 disposable bags, 4,125 disposable cups and 6,551 plastic bottles from the landfill.
