By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives meets for the first time in 2022 today in Belmopan.

The agenda includes four new bills: the Central Bank of Belize (Amendment) Bill to further capitalize the national banking institution; the Indictable Procedure (Amendment) Bill to expand the list of offenses that may be tried without a jury in certain criminal cases; allow court hearings or trials to be conducted virtually and other matters; a bill to give effect to the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES); and the Fisheries Resources (Amendment) Bill providing specific penalties for certain offences.

The House should also consider additional funding through an additional allocation, particularly for the Department of Health, and a motion to formally condemn domestic violence and designate it as “an issue of national importance” and to discuss actions to end it.

Prime Minister John Briceno is in attendance after being released from COVID-19, while Moses “Shyne” Barrow took his seat as Leader of the Opposition after being nominated earlier this week. The predecessor Patrick Faber is absent.

We will have other testimony from the National Assembly throughout the day.
